Athens, Greece

Well... Athens - what a city! Arrived into Athens on Friday night to a hot 35 degrees! Which felt like an oven after leaving London's "worst summer" in history.

We spent two days here looking at the ruins in the city and soaking up the traditional Greek food and drink like Mousaka and Souvalaki.... and of course the Greek salads. It's hard to understand how old Greece is coming from NZ... but it's pretty obvious when you see some of the ruins around the city.

Overall, the city seemed to be a lot dirtier than I imagined.... lots of very poor people and dodgey looking shops and markets everywhere... everyone trying to make a quick buck anyway they can. Those beautiful Greek buildings you see on the postcards aren't taken in Athens that's for sure :-) Although it looks as though the city has tidied up a lot after the 2004 Olympics... great infrastructure getting to and from the airport and port.
