Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik old town
Dubrovnik's main street so early that no-one was there!
Walking the city wall of Dubrovnik...

Everyone has said how lovely Dubrovnik is, and it's all true! A very picturesque city with lots of history. During our first night here we stayed in the "new town" and got picked up at the airport by a local civilian who had lived in Dubrovnik all of his life. Within no time he was talking about the war and how he fought from the fortress above...

Our last few nights in Dubrovnik we were right in the middle of the "old town". Loads of bars and restaurants and of course, loads of tourists! The highlight was probably walking around the city wall. 2km and took about an hour in the 30 degree heat. I nearly keeled over it was so hot, but we got there!

Of course, more lovely seafood and swimming in the sea in Dubrovnik... enjoy our photos, we took nearly 800 of Croatia in total so it was so hard to choose the best ones :-)

Korcula, Croatia

Our ferry that traveled the seas with us...
Umm my first glass of Korculanka wine
The squid season starts!
Korcula old town (from the Fortress)
Up at the Fortress in Korcula
Traditional sword dancing that we went to... apparently can only be found in this part of the world
Me being a dingo in the sea
Simon's favorite bum on the beach. Not mine... hehehe
More lovely seafood
A main Fortress of Korcula - we went back up there to take sun-set shots

We caught a ferry from Dubrovnik on our second day in Croatia to Korcula - one of the Dalmatia islands about 3 hours from Dubrovnik.

Arriving to cloud and drops of rain was apparently unheard of in this part of the world where travel agents are prepared to give you your money back unless the weather is fine! None the less, the beautiful weather everyone talks about was here to stay from our third day. Gorgeous blue skies and temperatures in the low thirties.

We had five days on the island simply soaking up the sun, tasting the fine local white wine (very cheap!) and eating so much fresh seafood! I like to call it 'Simon's seafood tour of Croatia'. I think he probably ate them out of squid!

Swimming in the sea was just gorgeous. The clearest water I have ever seen. Could see everything in the water :-)

Farnborough Airshow

The Red Arrows. 400mph and only 6 ft apart!

The Vulcan. It has only recently finished being restored, a process that took 15 years and £7m in private donations. Interesting news article about it here: Vulcan on BBC News
Sensible warning.

Nat tried very hard to get into one of the US fighter planes but unfortunately they said they were packing up and heading back to Washington. Oh well.

Sheltering from the the rather cool English (summer) wind.
The new A380 Airbus. It might have been rather late in being completed but I think the wait is worth it. It is incredibly maneuverable for such a huge plane. It was Nat's favourite.

Straight up.

We thought the non existent English summer might put paid to the airshow this year but although the rain threatened and it was pretty cold it was a great show. A mixture of military and commercial aircraft, both old and new, made for great entertainment. Highlight for Simon was the Red Arrows whilst Nat was pretty excited about the new Airbus--apparently she thinks all our future travel should be on the A380 Airbus. James and Tracy joined us for the day as well :)...James is a really plane spotter and was actively studying his souvenir programme--hehehe.
